GoDaddy Domain Fowarding Strips Responsive Styles

While working on Gallagher Media Group I ran into some issues. Gallagher Media Group is in a subfolder of another site. I wanted to save them some money so put the site here and then forwarded the domain name to the subfolder. I reset the forwarding in my Account Manager on GoDaddy. Everything worked great except when I viewed the site on my mobile device it wasn’t picking up mobile styles. I found this great tip  to fix this on GoDaddy’s Support site. I needed to set up an @ record. Hope you find it helpful.

To Update Your Domain Name’s IP Address for Forwarding
1. Log in to your Account Manager.
2. Next to Domains, click Launch.
3. From the DNS tab, select DNS Manager. The DNS Dashboard displays.
4. In the Domain list, for the domain name you want to update, click Edit Zone. The Zone File Editor displays.
5. In the A Host section, click the @ record.
6. For Points to, type 50.63.202.1
7. Click Save Zone File, and then click OK.

hosting

Do you use Godaddy to host your own or client websites? Sometimes Godaddy can seem a little slow. So here are a few other options.

  • ICDsoft – I have used this provider for a long time and it is great for small brochure sites. Speed and pricing are good. The have a good support system and customer service.
  • A Small Orange:  – good price, good speed, 24/7 support service,
  • WPEngine:  –  specifically for wordpress, not cheap, incredibly fast website easy to manage. With WPEngine you don’t have to worry about security, caching, updates, etc. Also has an Enterprise plan that is great for high traffic and really large sites.
  • Bluehost – just came across someone who was having issues with godaddy server load error which displayed “server stopped responding” in the browser. For the last two days I have been having this same issue. They moved their site to Bluehost and have no more issues. So here is another host to look to when choosing one for your website.

Oh yeah a simpler clearfix for css3/html5.

.clearfix:before, .clearfix:after { content: “\0020”; display: block; height: 0; overflow: hidden; }
.clearfix:after { clear: both; }

I found this cool tutorial to stylize a customized dropdown select. However the text above the dropdown was off in chrome. I looked for an easy fix to just write specific css to Chrome only. Found this and it worked!

CSS3 How to create full background image in browser

The goal here is a background image on a website that covers the entire browser window at all times. Let’s put some specifics on it:

  • Fills entire page with image, no white space
  • Scales image as needed
  • Retains image proportions (aspect ratio)
  • Image is centered on page
  • Does not cause scrollbars
  • As cross-browser compatible as possible
  • Isn’t some fancy shenanigans like Flash
